Workwear to stay cool this summer

It’s getting hot outside, so take off . . . . . . .

No, you really shouldn’t do that, in the heat of summer it’s important to find the right workwear for the conditions.

Global warming is having an impact on the average temperatures in the UK, each year the met office is registering record temperatures. For those that work in the elements, the hot weather can make conditions tough and in some cases even dangerous.

The right type of clothing is key to managing comfort, and here we will show you some of the things to consider and the hot weather workwear options available. Everyone has probably heard that light coloured loose clothing is best, but it’s more complex than that.

Everything about your chosen workwear will affect your comfort in the heat, including choosing the right fabric, the construction and even the colour.

Fabrics:
Cotton and other natural fibres are generally considered best as moisture will evaporate quickly from this material allowing you to cool down quicker. Polyester and other man-made fabrics tend to collect moisture and don’t dry as quickly, causing discomfort to the wearer.

The weave:
The weave of your chosen fabric can have a big effect on comfort. The less dense the weave the more cooling it will be when in contact with the skin. Many consider an oxford weave a good option for the summer months.

The colour:
You would think that a light blue cotton shirt would be perfect for those sunny days, but think again! If you want to avoid unsightly sweat patches stick to white or darker colours. There have been lots of scientific debates about which colours absorb or reflect the most heat, the fact is that the colour makes little difference and it’s more important to choose something loose-fitting.

Performance clothing:
Performance wear has come on leaps and bounds over the last few years. With fabrics and garments designed to wick sweat away from the skin, and be lightweight and cooling to the skin.

Headwear:
Protecting your head, face and neck from the sun’s rays is important, especially during the hottest part of the day. Choose a hat that offers UV protection and offers shade for your face.
