Looking for Sustainable Clothing in 2023: A Guide to Ethical Fashion

As we become more aware of the impact of fast fashion on the environment and human rights, many of us are making a conscious effort to support sustainable clothing brands. But with so many options out there, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. In this post, we’ll explore some tips for finding sustainable clothing in 2023.

Why Choose Sustainable Clothing?

Firstly, it’s worth considering why sustainable clothing is important. The fashion industry handles a significant amount of pollution and waste, from water usage and chemical runoff to textile waste and carbon emissions. By choosing sustainable clothing brands, we can reduce our own impact on the environment and support companies that prioritise ethical practices. We know our customers are looking for environmentally mindful clothing, and we are pleased to have many options available to meet this expectation.

How to Find Sustainable Clothing

Research Brands: One of the best ways to find sustainable clothing brands is through research. Look for companies that prioritise eco-friendly materials, fair labour practices, and transparent supply chains. Check out their websites and read reviews from other customers.

Look for Certifications: Some sustainable clothing brands have certifications that guarantee their ethical practices, such as Fair Trade Certified or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). Below we have a cheat sheet for looking out for these certifications and what the logos look like.

Certifications To Look Out For

GOTS – The Global Organic Textile Standard was developed by leading standard setters to define world-wide recognised requirements for organic textiles.

GRS – The Global Recycled Standard is a voluntary product standard for tracking and verifying the content of recycled materials in a final product.

RCS – The Recycled Claim Standard label enables to market textiles made from recycled raw materials.

PETA – People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, companies listed either signed PETA’s statement of assurance or supplied a statement verifying that they do not conduct or commission any animal tests on ingredients, formulations, or finished products and that they pledge not to do so in the future.

SEDEX – Supplier Ethical Data Exchange, which is an online system that allows suppliers to maintain data on ethical & responsible practices and allows them to share this information with their customers.

Oeko-Tex – Certified products have been tested for harmful substances to protect your health.

Sustainable Brands We Offer

Anthem – Their cotton is naturally absorbent and breathable without harsh chemicals. It is kind to the planet and is biodegradable. They recycle bottles that would otherwise would have gone to waste. Closing the loop with big tech performance and a tiny eco footprint.

AWDis Écologie – Their vision is a sustainable future with low carbon impact, and we only use GOTS, RCS, SEDEX, or Oeko-Tex certified factories. They have in-country teams to check our global supply chain for fair and safe working practices. Their garments perform above industry standards and are 100% free of animal ingredients, recognised by the PETA-Approved Vegan logo. We take responsibility for our manufacturing methods matching our customers’ ideals.

Stanley/Stella – Stanley/Stella have several teams of people to liaise with many certified factories to make sure their products are up to a sustainable level. Their guiding framework, the Stanley/Stella Charter launched in 2022, outlines their commitment to addressing environmental, social, and governance factors and inspires their community to care about the planet and its people. It includes ten core principles that guide their behaviour in the garment industry.

What-makes-a-garment-sustainable

In search of sustainable customised garments

There is no denying that more and more of us have a growing concern for the planet and the damage we are causing to it. When it comes to purchasing customised clothing there are many options available that help to minimise the contribution to global warming. Let’s take a look at some of them . . .

Garments go on a long journey from the cotton fields right through to the finished customised product. Many of the stages a product goes through will have some environmental impact, you can minimise that impact by carefully choosing the products and services you purchase.

Across the industry, there are a number of accreditations that many suppliers are awarded. These include Fairtrade, WRAP, Sedex, Fair Wear, Peta Vegan Approved and many others.

Organic Customised Garments

If you’d looked only a couple of years ago you’d hard been hard pushed to find a good choice of organic clothing. But now more and more producers are starting to offer organic options and for some of them, this has become their primary focus.

Brands such as STANLEY/STELLA, écologie by AWDis and Babybugz now have complete sustainable ranges, in some cases using 100% organic cotton.

Recycled Customised Clothing

Another recent trend is the introduction of clothing made from recycled materials. Several suppliers are using items such as plastic bottles which have been collected from recycling centres and made into a thread. This is then used to manufacture lots of different garments including headwear and bags.

Carbon Neutral Garment Decorations

When it comes to customisation, some of our processes utilise accredited methods. Our DTG printer for example uses a waterless NeoPigmentTM print process that is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified and Global Organic Textiles (GOTS-3V) certified.

The roof of our factory in Ludlow is adorned with solar panels, meaning that some of our processes are powered by green energy.

It’s a simple fact that no manufacturing process comes without issues, whether it be power consumption, water usage, transportation etc. Because of this, in addition to making continuous sustainability improvements, we offset our companies carbon emissions each year by the planting of trees.
